The electrical retailer Comet is to be placed into administration next week, which will put around 6,000 jobs at risk and make them the most high-profile casualty on Britain's embattled High Street since the start of the financial crisis.
Comet stated that was 'urgently working' on plans to secure the company's future and it is expected that administrators will seek a buyer for the business.
The 240-store chain confirmed the move on Thursday (1st November 2012) after earlier informing staff.
It will be the 29th High Street retailer to go into administration since the turn of the year and the most well-known failure since Woolworths collapsed in 2008 with around 30,000 jobs losses.
Comet said it was "urgently working" on plans to secure the company's future and it is expected that administrators will seek a buyer for the business.
Restructuring specialist Deloitte has been lined up to handle the administration.
Customers with outstanding orders and those with gift cards and vouchers are being told it is "business as usual until further notice" and that the group intends to fulfil deliveries of products that have been paid for.
A further phase of remodelling was carried out on the Capitol Centre Retail Park, Walton-le-Dale.
Manchester architect, The Harris Partnership, provided designs for extensive modifications and new builds for a 35,000sq feet Tesco Home Plus, 14,000sq feet TK Maxx and 9,000sq feet Homesense, a part of the TK Maxx brand, totalling £6.2 million.
Further designs were included for a new slip road off London Way into the park, providing easier access, along with 2,500sq. feet of retail premises for new tenants, Sub-Way and Starbucks Coffee.
Tesco Homeplus Stores offer all of Tesco's ranges except food in warehouse-style units in retail parks. Tesco is using this format because only 20% of its customers have access to a Tesco Extra, and the company is restricted in how many of its superstores it can convert into Extras and how quickly it can do so. Large units for non-food retailing are much more readily available.
There are currently 11 Homeplus stores nationwide. The newest Homeplus store opened in Walton le Dale, Preston in June 2009.
